TROUBLESHOOTING A HEARING AID

PROBLEM: The hearing aid is "dead".

SOLUTION:

  • Ensure that the voltage of the battery is o.k.
  • Ensure that the battery has been inserted correctly.
  • Remove the earmold and examine it for any clogs. It may need to be washed with soapy water.
  • Ensure that the hearing aid is not set on "T".
  • If the hearing aid has been wet, immediately place it in a dri-aid kit or a jar of dry rice with foam to dry out the components.
  • Consult an Audiologist for further electroacoustic testing.

PROBLEM: Feedback or "squeal".

SOLUTION:

  • Ensure that the earmold is properly positioned in the ear.
  • Check the earmold for cracks.
  • Ensure that the earmold is not too small.
  • Excessive wax in the ear can cause the sound to reflect off of it and feedback.
  • Check with an Audiologist or Doctor to examine the status of the ear. Hydrogen peroxide is often very helpful with ear wax removal, but must not be initiated without professional consult with an Audiologist or Physician.

NOTE: Feedback is normal under certain conditions (i.e., when the hearing aid is taken out of the ear and is still on or when the hearing aid is in place in the ear and a hand or object is placed near the ear, for example a hat).

PROBLEM: Intermittent signal or distortion.

SOLUTION:

  • The microphone could be dirty and needs to be cleaned out. Consult your Audiologist to assess the problem. The aid needs to be sent to the manufacturer for repair.
  • Moisture in the hearing aid or earmold can often contribute to this problem. Ensure that a dri-aid kit is used when the hearing aids are not being worn. Weak batteries can cause the signal to be intermittent and would need to be checked and replaced.
  • Internal controls could be dirty or malfunctioning. Consult with your Audiologist to assess and determine if the problem warrants manufacturer's repair.

PROBLEM: Weak sound

SOLUTION:

  • Ensure that the battery has the appropriate voltage.
  • Clean the earmold and check for a partial obstruction.
  • Ensure that the tubing is dry and in place.
