Central Speech and Hearing Clinic

The Central Speech and Hearing Clinic is an independent, not-for-profit charity, established in 1989 and dedicated to assisting children and adults, who are deaf or hard-of-hearing, to fully integrate into a hearing world. A board of volunteers made up of parents, adult cochlear implant users, healthcare professionals and committed community leaders governs the Clinic.

With the use of advanced hearing aids or cochlear implants and intensive Auditory-Verbal therapy we teach children, who are deaf or hard-of-hearing, how to listen, hear and speak.

Additionally, adults, who are deaf or hard-of-hearing, are re-introduced to a world of sound when they come to our adult program to access the cochlear implant services that are offered.

The Children's Auditory-Verbal Program

The Central Speech and Hearing Clinic is a family-centred facility dedicated to providing assistance to children, who are deaf or hard-of-hearing. Parents and Auditory-Verbal therapists work together to teach the children how to listen, hear and speak. The children attend regular schools in their neighbourhood with their hearing peers. One of our goals is to ensure that our children become independent, participating citizens in mainstream society.

Children may be accepted into the program as early as one week of age. Upon entering the program, the children are fitted with state-of-the-art hearing aids and the therapist begins working with both the child and the parents. The parents learn Auditory-Verbal techniques from the therapist and then begin the journey of teaching their child how to listen, hear and speak.

With many years of experience and many successful graduates, the Central Speech and Hearing Clinic offers a proven program to parents who want their children to grow up in regular learning and living environments.

The Adult Cochlear Implant Program

The Central Speech and Hearing Clinic works with adults, who are deaf or hard-of-hearing, who wish to explore their candidacy for a cochlear implant. The Clinic offers candidacy assessment and support if surgery is indicated. Although Central Speech is not a surgical centre, it is able to offer extensive pre and post surgical support including initial activation, programming, assessment, and on-going assistance.
